Whitewash is a documentary by directory Ted Woods on the history of black surfers. Talk about a great subject! It recently showed at the NY Surf Film Festival. Narrated by Ben Harper, this movie explores the stereotypes, struggles and triumphs of black surfers in America. I’d read an article in The Surfer’s Path some years back about a group of black surfers who frequent Venice and other LA city breaks and how hard it is for them to balance their city life with their surfing life. They’d get questioned, teased and confused looks every time they went out to the beach, both by strangers and friends. Imagine that, in this day an age. I’d always been intrigued by that article. This film looks like it takes that subject to the next level.
