Well Now Who To Root For?! The Dutch!

Switzerland has made a fine mess of their bid for victory. Granted: both Swiss games were exciting matches – they just managed to not win either game. Hence, even before their third group game, the Swiss have committed themselves to a quick exit.

Austria likewise is not showing well. Although they have not played as admirably as the Swiss. They seemed awkward and out of place. I have not seen their second game yet, but I don’t expect they will turn their ship around. I suspect they too will not make it out of group play.

Sweet Dutch Goal - FABRICE COFFRINI/AFP/Getty ImagesBut with any tournament, its no fun if you have no one to root for. And so, paint me orange and call me Hurdy Gurdy, I throw my heart and my number-one-foam-finger behind the Dutch. I bet all my rocks and sticks on The Netherlands (which is forever sinking). I was so impressed with their game against Italy. Such sweet goals and so many of them.

I know I have no tangible ties to Holland. I know a few Dutch people. I’ve been to Holland (and not just Amsterdam). (I often sing the praises of their food, hospitality and shops devoted entirely to cheese!) I still have a soft spot for Germany as my family does come from there (but so many generations ago its hard to base my fandom on that tie any more I can pick Holland because of my evangelical love of cheese). Or can I? I love cheese. They love cheese. Maybe we were meant to be together.

Go The Netherlands!

I’m glad you’re putting all your Holland Money on, er, Holland (which is forever sinking). I was going to suggest that when you were having your initial doubts – perhaps you were thinking of Mud(d)’s loss of all his Holland Money at World Cup ’98?

How can I comment on current standings when you are behind on watching games? All I can say is that I hope that Shitaly doesn’t win and Ze Germans sind heiße Scheiße!!

p.s. What do you make of Robben’s very tight uniform?
