And So It Begins

I saw my first legitimate Christmas commercial today. I’m not giving any sort of social commentary or anything here. Just marking the date so I can cross-check it next year. Maybe next year they will start running Halloween-Christmas hybrid commercials in September. Wouldn’t Tim Burton be proud?

Nigel also had a similar experience on Saturday with a holiday Home Depot commercial. His response began with an angry, declarative “Nooo!” but swiftly turned to sadness and sympathetic understanding when he realized that our economy and the housing market are hitting the Orange Giant especially hard. Plus, what will he do on Sunday afternoons if he can’t browse the Tool Bin?

I dig. Cruising the bargain tool bin is always a must as Les Depot Maison. And as much as I do understand businesses’ need to get as much out of the holiday season as possible, I do hope they at least hold off on the Christmas Carol in-store soundtracks until after Thanksgiving.

Maybe to discourage that we can start developing a bevy of Thanksgiving songs that stores can play between Halloween and Christmas. We can create such future classics as “Pilgrim, Pilgrim,” “Please Pass the Horn (of Plenty)” aka “The Cornucopia Song” and the hilarious “You Call It Maize, We Call It Corn.”

Weren’t those songs on the Mighty Wind soundtrack?

Please join me in the rousing chorus (nobody really remembers the words to the verses anymore):

So pass the horn o’plenty, Miles
O pass it ’round and round
On women chaste the horn will smile
But on fallen whores ’twill frown
In the horn find men of virtue
    Naught but what they bring
Let men who seek the horn for gain
    Be burned while Angels sing!

O pass the horn, o pass the horn
    O pass the horn o’plenty!
